Are you familiar with Elgin, South Carolina? This interesting little town was originally called Jeffers after the postmaster who had the post office in his house. The town was called Jeffers as early as 1832.

When the Seaboard Railroad came to town, it livened up the small community. Around that time, the name of the town was changed from Jeffers to Blaney to honor a man connected with the railroad.

In the 1960's, the name of the town was again changed. This time the name became Elgin because of the Elgin Watch Company that came to Blaney. Unfortunately, the company only stayed in town four years. This name change remains a controversial issue among long time Elgin residents. However, the old name is still around: Blaney Baptist Church, Blaney Elementary School and Blaney Dragstrip.

Lest you get confused, there is another Elgin in South Carolina. It has no post office nor is it incorporated. This other Elgin (which was named Elgin before the one in Kershaw County) is in Lancaster County, near Heath Springs.

Our Elgin is 24 miles from South Carolina's capitol city, Columbia. The Town of Elgin is in Kershaw County; but the Elgin address crosses the county line into Richland County.
