What makes 2100 Kendall Street in Camden, SC a historic
treasure versus just an old home?

If I may, let me take you back to the 1800's to give you
some background. (Should this not interest you, just skip on
down the page. All the attributes of this historic Camden, SC home are
there.)
Back in the 1800's and much of the 1900's, cotton was king
in many areas of the South. Hence, most local towns of any
size had at least one cotton mill. Spindles were used to blend
raw cotton fibers into a cotton yarn, which was then woven into
various kinds of fine quality print cloth. The history of
Camden, South Carolina's cotton mills began with the DeKalb
Factory, which was established in 1838.
These facts on the Camden cotton mills were derived from a
book by Howard Woody and Davie Beard, "From S.C. Postcards
Volume VIII Camden", Copyright 2003.

Kendall Lake
The DeKalb Factory was situated at the western end of the dam
that created the Old Factory Pond on Little Pine Tree Creek.
Production started with 1,000 spindles. By 1846, production was
increased to 1680 spindles and 40 looms. That same year, the
annual raw cotton used was 1,000 bales. Monthly expenses for
the mill ran around $900; and 72 operators were employed. The
mill village housed 154 occupants in small cottages. This DeKalb
Factory burned before the Civil War.
The second mill was the Camden (Hermitage) Cotton Mill, which
was begun in 1890.
The DeKalb Cotton Mill was established in 1900 located by the
site of the first mill (DeKalb Factory which burned).
The DeKalb Cotton Mill was planned and organized in 1899 and
opened for business in April 1901. W.B. Smith Whaley of Columbia,
S.C. designed the factory; and it was built at a cost of $144,000.
This mill began under local leadership with 12,500 spindles, 300
looms and a factory village of 70 cottages. In 1903, this DeKalb
Cotton Mill closed. The mill opened again in 1905 as Pine Creek
Mill. It started up with 18,816 spindles and 482 looms, which
consumed 3000 bales of cotton annually.
Kendall Mill Today
Due to financial problems in 1907, the Pine Creek Mill changed
hands. Once again in 1916, the mill had new owners. A northern
financial group, led by H.P. Kendall, bought the facilities and
changed the name to Wateree Mill.
After the mill was purchased by the Kendall group, there was
strong financial backing. Therefore, these mills could pay for
musical instruments, sports equipment, YMCAs, churches and schools
plus educational, cultural and athletic events. The Wateree Mill
Band, which was Camden's first mill band, was asked to perform in
many parades and civic events.

Kendall Park & Walking Track Today...a nice, peaceful place to exercise safely.
During the 1920's, Kendall's Wateree Mill fielded a baseball
team. Not only factory workers, but also management enjoyed
playing other area mill and civic teams. The Kendall group realized
the enthusiasm and pride that operators had in their teams made
for a happy, contented work force, which ofen times meant higher
production and profit for the mills.
The Kendall Mill gave $200 and land near the village for a mill
church, which was first known as Pine Creek Church. Mill village
churches many times started as all denominational. During the week,
the Pine Creek Church building was used for day care.
The Pine Tree School was originally started as a mill school in
1903. It began in a small frame building with 40 of the mill
operators' children. Their daily schedule included classes, tests
and recitations.
Kendall Mill and Kendall Mill Village are on the National Register
of Historical Places. With this status and as homes are steadily being renovated in the Kendall Mill Village, the well loved home at 2100 Kendall Street, Camden, SC will only increase in value. You can't beat that! This home could qualify you for a $8000 tax credit, too! In addition, 2100 Kendall qualifies for 100% financing and a very low interest rate.
So, you see if this historic home could talk, oh, the stories it
could tell! It would tell of neighborhood children as young as 8
years old working in the mill, standing on a box to reach the equipment. 2100 Kendall Street would talk of a simpler time, when free
time was spent visiting, picnicing, fishing, swimming and on other
family oriented activities. This home full of history might speak
of how a bell rang, throughout the mill village, 15 minutes before
each shift change. One remembrance may have been of how many men
and women started work in the mill as a young child and remained
there until retirement.
After World War II, Kendall Mill gave the occupants of the village
houses an opportunity to purchase the home in which he or she lived.
Many homes were sold for between $1000 and $2000 each. (In 2008, Kendall Mill was sold and the name has been changed to Covidien.)
As the years went by, much of the Kendall Mill Village fell into
disrepair. Thankfully, though, a few years back, some locals began
to restore the village.
Around the end of June 2001, a former boss of mine, Phil,
purchased one of these historic Camden, SC homes for his parents and Betty, his
sister. The total renovation was a very lengthy process. No expense
was spared. A reputable, local contractor was hired, who, by the way, will speak to those seriously interested in purchasing 2100 Kendall Street. The updating
included, but was not limited to: new vinyl siding, new heat and air (4 ton AC),
new galvanized roof, new triple pane tilt out windows, extra insulation
in the walls and attic, bulkhead access redone, gutters added, new floors throughout including new hardwoods
in the living room, rebuilt front porch, every floor joist torn out and replaced, refurbished living room fireplace with gas logs added, all plumbing and fixtures (sinks, tubs and
toilets) replaced, new wiring throughout, beautiful new light fixtures and ceiling
fans, 3 electrical receptacles added outside, smooth ceilings, new copper kitchen sink, solid wood kitchen countertops, added storage space, added molding, new
bookshelves, living room bay window, new doors throughout with new hardware, new kitchen cabinets and shelving with new hardware, new appliances,
walk in closet in Master Bedroom, office or hobby/crafts room with storage room galore, pantry, added termite protection, sodded and landscaped yard.

I-20, and a walking path. On a quiet, side street corner lot, it shares a common lake with the mill village.
The owner has invested much in this historic home; but his family is no
longer in Camden, South Carolina. So, he has no need for 2100 Kendall
Street. As a result, this owner is willing to sacrifice this piece of
history (built in 1903) for only $129,999! How can a price be placed on the quality and
joy of life in this serene, close knit community, in a home that combines
the best of the early 1900's and today?
Oh, let's get you some directions, if you'd like to ride by for a look in the windows: Take I20 to Exit #98, which is the Camden exit onto Hwy 521. Turn North toward Camden. At the 3rd stoplight, turn right, which is Hwy #1 North. Turn left on Mill Street, which is the 3rd stoplight. Take a right onto Haile Street, which should have a sign indicating that you're headed toward a hospital. Turn left on 4th Avenue. This turn is straight across from Wateree Baptist Church (the church originally started as a Kendall mill village church). 2100 Kendall Street is at the first corner facing Kendall Street.
