South Carolina Recipes
from Family and Friends

South Carolina never seems to lack for bad press. One thing that consistently receives good media and word of mouth support is our southern cooking, though.

I am the product of parents who were from "The Greatest Generation" as I believe Tom Brokaw named them. They were wonderful, God-fearing, honest working class people. Many of my greatest early memories revolve around food. In that time, few people ate out. Growing up, my family's life revolved around church, extended family and friends. Just as I remember the spreads fit for a king that relatives provided when we visited them. So, also, do I remember the pride my mom took in cooking for us, extended family and friends. During my childhood, church revivals (one in the Spring and another in the Fall) were a time that our pastor and the visiting preacher plus their families ate with a member's family. Then, there were frequent church "covered dish" meals, ice cream and cake socials plus food taken to the sick or sorrowful. We were fortunate enough to frequently have a friend or two over to eat with us. Our meals were not extravagant, just good home cooking shared with those we loved. I could ramble on and on, but, you get an idea of how food was at the center of our lives.

Here, you'll find recipes of all kinds. Some of these have been passed down through the years. Others are more recent concoctions. And, as varied as the types of recipes are, the sources are even more so. Many came from beloved family members...recipes that we grew up eating. Then, there are recipes that our terrific, food-loving friends and neighbors shared with us. There may be recipes here that came from the backs of food jars, boxes or cans. The possibility is great, too, that these did not originate here in South Carolina.

My wish is that you'd make these recipes your own. Add ingredients to them or take some away to suit your family's taste. The much loved cooks who served these in years past would be delighted!

Too, it would be such a treat if you would like to pass along some of your recipes. You may send them through the "Contact Me" page. And, share this recipe link with your own family and friends.

Enjoy!!!
